Author: Brennan Manning
Description: I’m a big fan of Brennan Manning, so I’m bound to appreciate this offering. On the other hand, it’s worth noting that this little book is ‘adapted’ from the book ‘Abba’s Child’ which I have reviewed elsewhere. That book was excellent. This one is like a cut-down version. What that means to me is that, if you’re new the Manning, this is a nice little taster to give you an idea of his style and approach. Having read this second, however, I found it a little less satisfying.
With that comment out of the way, this little volume is, however, full of gems which I appreciated reading again. Comments on the value of solitude, the importance of reconciliation and warnings to not be judgemental are always challenging (in a good way). The great irony of discovering freedom in acknowledging we are relatively powerless in many aspects of our lives, for example, is so counter-cultural as to seem almost absurd. The Larry Hein ‘blessing’ being a great example of this:
May all your expectations be frustrated, may all your plans be thwarted, may all your desires be withered into nothingness, that you may experience the powerlessness and poverty of a child and sing and dance in the love of God who is Father, Son, and Spirit.
The identification of our inner ‘imposter’ (or false self) is also helpful – the imposter tells us that we shouldn’t be our real selves because nobody likes us as we are so we invent a new self that everybody will admire. The imposter doesn’t want us to come out of hiding. But Brennan (and God) challenges us to take the risk of true authenticity. It’s scary, but in the long run it is worth it.
If you’ve heard of Brennan Manning, and wondered if you would enjoy his writing, take a dip with this little book (just 127pp)!
